MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) is one of the most advanced and efficient biological wastewater treatment technologies used in modern STP (Sewage Treatment Plants) and ETP (Effluent Treatment Plants). It is designed to treat high organic load wastewater using a unique combination of aeration and suspended media carriers. Developed in Norway in the late 1980s, MBBR has become one of the most preferred technologies across the world due to its low footprint, stable performance, and low maintenance requirements. At SK Enviro Solutions, we design and manufacture MBBR-based STP and ETP plants for residential societies, commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, industries, and institutional projects across India.
1. What Is MBBR Technology?
MBBR is a biological wastewater treatment process where specially designed free-floating plastic media are used inside the aeration tank. These media act as a surface where microorganisms grow and form a biofilm. As wastewater continuously flows through the reactor, microorganisms consume organic pollutants and convert them into harmless byproducts like carbon dioxide and treated water. Unlike traditional systems such as activated sludge, MBBR does not require recycling of sludge, making the system simpler, cleaner, and highly efficient. The presence of thousands of media carriers increases the active surface area, which directly increases biological treatment efficiency. With more surface area available, more microorganisms can grow—leading to faster and more effective treatment even in smaller tank sizes.
2. How MBBR Works (Step-by-Step)
A) Wastewater Inlet and Screening: Incoming wastewater from residential or industrial sources passes through a screening chamber, removing unwanted solid particles like plastics, rags, and debris.
B) Aeration Tank with MBBR Media (Main Biological Treatment): Floating biofilm carriers fill 40–70% of the tank volume. These carriers continuously move inside the tank due to the air supplied by blowers. Microorganisms attach to the media and break down BOD, COD, and organic impurities.
C) Settling / Secondary Clarifier: After biological treatment, wastewater flows into the clarifier, where activated sludge settles at the bottom and clear water moves to the next stage.
D) Tertiary Filtration and Disinfection: Treated water is filtered through media filters, activated carbon filters, UV/ozone system, or chlorination before reuse.
“Smart water treatment is not just technology — it’s our commitment to a cleaner, greener future.”
3. Benefits of MBBR Technology
A) Compact Design – Requires Less Space: MBBR tanks are smaller compared to traditional activated sludge systems. It fits in tight spaces, making it ideal for residential projects, commercial buildings, and retrofit upgrades.
B) Low Maintenance – No Sludge Recirculation: The biggest advantage is that MBBR does not require sludge recycling pumps. This reduces mechanical failures, operator dependence, and electricity consumption.
C) High Efficiency – Better BOD / COD Reduction: Due to a large biofilm surface area, the removal efficiency of BOD and COD is excellent, meeting CPCB discharge norms consistently.
D) Handles High Load Variation: Even if the inflow fluctuates, the system remains stable. This makes MBBR ideal for hotels, malls, and industrial projects where wastewater generation varies.
E) Energy Efficient System: MBBR requires lower aeration energy compared to conventional systems, resulting in long-term cost savings.
F) Scalable and Modular Technology: Treatment capacity can be increased simply by adding more media without expanding the tank structure—saving time and money.
