Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) STP – The Future of Compact & High-Efficiency Wastewater Treatment

Simplify Water Care

MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) is one of the most advanced wastewater treatment technologies, combining biological treatment with high-quality membrane filtration. It produces crystal-clear, disinfected, and reusable water suitable for flushing, gardening, cooling towers, and industrial processes. At SK Enviro Solutions, we design and deliver premium MBR-based STP and ETP plants for residential societies, commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels, and industries where superior effluent quality is required.

1. What Is MBR Technology?

MBR technology integrates two major processes: (1) Activated sludge biological treatment and (2) Membrane filtration (UF/MF membranes). Instead of depending on clarifiers or settling tanks, MBR uses submerged hollow-fiber or flat-sheet membranes to physically filter out suspended solids, bacteria, pathogens, and turbidity.

Because the membrane pores are extremely small (0.1–0.4 microns), the treated water is of very high quality—often meeting tertiary treatment standards without the need for additional filters. This makes MBR ideal for projects where strict regulatory compliance, space-saving, and premium treatment quality are required.

2. How MBR Works (Step-by-Step)

A) Pre-Screening: Wastewater first passes through fine screens (2–5 mm) to remove plastics, rags, and debris that may damage the membranes.

B) Biological Treatment in Aeration Tank: Microorganisms degrade BOD, COD, ammonia, and organic pollutants. The aeration system ensures proper oxygen supply and mixing for efficient biological breakdown.

C) Membrane Separation (Hollow Fiber / Flat Sheet): Mixed liquor enters the membrane tank, where submerged membranes filter out solids, suspended impurities, and microorganisms. Only clean, filtered water passes through membrane pores, while sludge remains in the tank.

D) Permeate Extraction: A vacuum or suction pump gently pulls treated water through membranes. The resulting water is crystal-clear, odorless, and suitable for reuse applications.

E) Sludge Wasting: Excess sludge is periodically removed and sent for dewatering or sludge drying bed disposal. The system is highly stable and requires minimal sludge handling.

“MBR produces high-quality water with minimal footprint and maximum efficiency — making it the future of modern wastewater treatment.”

3. Benefits of MBR Technology

A) Superior Water Quality (Crystal Clear Output):
MBR systems produce water with almost zero suspended solids, low turbidity, and reduced pathogens—making it suitable for reuse without additional filtration.

B) Very Compact Design (Small Footprint):
No need for secondary clarifiers, tertiary filters, or large aeration tanks. Ideal for tight spaces in urban residential projects and commercial buildings.

C) High Biological Efficiency:
Higher MLSS levels and improved oxygen transfer mean faster treatment and better removal of BOD/COD compared to conventional systems.

D) Consistent Performance:
Membranes act as a physical barrier ensuring stable output even when wastewater quality fluctuates. Ideal for hotels, malls, hospitals, and industries.

E) Low Maintenance & Fully Automated:
Backwashing and cleaning cycles are automatic, reducing operator effort. MBR integrates seamlessly with PLC/SCADA for remote monitoring.

F) Odor-Free & Noise-Free Operation:
Membrane tanks are enclosed and controlled, preventing odor release—perfect for sensitive residential environments.

G) Long Service Life:
Membranes typically last 7–10 years when operated under recommended conditions, making the system highly reliable.
